Project: Beachside Cafe
Client: Awaba
Location: Sydney
Discipline: Naming | Identity | Interiors | Graphics | Hospitality

Designed in 1996 and not altered since, Awaba cafe remains an iconic Australian beachside cafe. Wallpaper magazine’s Tyler Brulee described it as one of five ‘must visit locations” in Sydney significantly improving the self esteem of the local residents who although wealthy live in a somewhat conservative suburb.

Designed as a “celebration of place” its simple palette of concrete, mirror and glass represents a timeless and understated simplicity that we strive for in our work.

"Short Black reaches for superlatives to do justice to Awaba Café on Balmoral Beach. The food is superb, the position unbeatable and the design breathtaking. Everything that Short Black tasted was elegant and immensely satisfying. But it’s the interior that leaves you groping for adjectives." - Maggie Alderson, Sydney Morning Herald
